Matt Cain was back to regular season form today as he shut down the White Sox. Giants roll 6-1.

Diamond Notes:

- If you can believe it, rain was in the forecast again today. In fact, it was good thing this game was in the West Valley as the MiLB games got cancelled due to the morning rain. This also meant no BP, but the team did take infield practice.

- A couple of observations from infield, Travis Ishikawa was taking flies in LF as well as manning 1B. Perhaps they need to find another slot for him as Buster Posey was taking infield at 1B.

- You’ll see them in the gallery but I have to mention Brian Wilson’s pre-game turf shoes. I tried taking a photo of them before but it was a night game and the “Neon Orange” on them didn’t make it easy to focus from a distance.

They are throwback Nikes with like a snake skin leather, neon orange highlights, and they are high tops. On the side of them is embroidered “Sandman.”

I know, who cares right? I just thought I’d mention it because you can see them from home while he’s near the bullpen. Also, might “Sandman” be he new nickname?

- As I mentioned earlier, Matt Cain was dealing today 6.2IP 3H 1R 0ER BB 2K’s.

- The unearned run occurred in the bottom of the 5th as a result of 2 errors. With one out a bouncer was hit down the first base line and Aubrey Huff misread the play allowing the ball to go under his glove and roll to shallow RF. That runner would eventually score from 3B as a ball was hit directly to Matt Downs but it ricocheted off his glove in to CF. Thus, it took 5 outs that inning for the Sox to put something on the board against Cain. The Giants offense was the complete opposite.

- This game was a double buffet as the Giants hit 7 doubles off of the Sox pitching (6 of them attributed to SP Floyd, 1 to RP Pena). Watching Bengie leg out doubles is also very fun. Whenever you get to see him slide into 2B it’s going to be a good game.

- There actually should have been 8 doubles today, but Renteria kind of got robbed. I say kind of because it was an awkward play.

Edgar hit a looper down the RF line that barely fell in fair. It then proceeded foul and swiftly rolled over near the stands. A bunch of fans leant over the padding to get the ball but none of them was able to catch it. Edgar, and many of others, thought the fans touched it making it an automatic double. The ump said no and as Renteria was kind of gradually making his way to 2B, he had to turn on the jets the throw was there and he was tagged out.

- The relief rotation today was a little interesting. Matt was lifted with a runner on 1b and 2 outs in the 7th. He was dealing, so I guess pitch count/relief work spawn the decision to yank him.

Hinshaw comes in and gets out of the inning. His day is done.

Wilson comes in to pitch the 8th, facing 3 batters and inducing a DP and his day is done.

Romo starts the 9th, faces 1 batter and he’s done.

Runzler comes in and shuts it down.

Really interesting use of these guys. I guess if they came on the bus, they were going to throw at someone.

- AJ Pierzynski was in the house and when he got up to bat there were more boos than anything else. It was pretty hilarious actually. Many Giants fans were in attendance of this small crowd. One guy really disliked him. Yelling “AJ? more like DP Pierzynski!!!” Immediately following his taunt, AJ hits in to the only double play the Giants turn today. That’s the AJ we all remember!

UPDATE: I forgot to mention that tomorrow is the super rare DOUBLE HEADER! 1pm in Goodyear vs the Reds, and 6pm in Surprise vs. the Royals. I will be at both gamesso prepare for some late coverage.
