Giants found the long ball today but it wasn’t enough as they fall 10-8 to the Brewers. I didn’t stay for the whole game today so the diamond notes will be short.
Diamond Notes:
- Jonathan Sanchez just can’t seem to have great outings back to back even in Spring Training. As I said on Wednesday, I am a huge Sanchez supporter, but he needs to help me out every once and awhile. 6ER on 3H but 5BBs. No surprises here, the control was off today. I did think the ump’s strike zone was pretty tight, but it’s definitely not an excuse. The worst part is the lineup the Brewers threw out there was almost “C” squad with the exception of McGehee and Zaun, but they aren’t the Brauns and Fielders of the world either. Sanchez techincally didn’t do all the damage himself. He was pulled with the bases loaded. Dan Turpen came in in relief and gave up 2 doubles that sliced down the RF line. Thus all of the inherited runners scored.
- The Giants actually looked more like the Brewers today with 4 homeruns including a lead off shot by Aaron Rowand. Rowand’s was definitely no cheapy, blasted to the absolute deepest part of the yard in CF which may have been 440ft. You can actually watch a replay on the Giants homepage.
The first three homers were pretty much no doubters. Huff’s was a monster to right center and Lewis’ was also a shot down the RF line. The fourth was by Nate Schierholtz, and by definition I guess you would call it a “doubter.” The reason I say that was because looked like it was going to get caught in front of the wall, but that thing just kept going and cleared it by maybe half a foot. The whole crowd was like, “uh….uh…..ALRIGHT!” Kind of a pause to wait for the spinning finger. I don’t care if it bounces off the yellow coping or if it’s hit in to McCovey cove. If it puts run(s) on the board, we’re in business.
- I left right as Buster Posey was entering the game, but he had another legit showing today. A PO snapper to 1B, 2RBIs, and 2 out run production.
- Last little note. The last couple of games the pre-game ceremonies have been interesting.
A couple days ago, the guy who through the first pitch literally did a full wind up and release but the ball dropped about a foot in front of him and stayed there. No joke, it’s was the most awkward first pitch I have ever seen. Steve Holm didn’t need to squat let alone bring a glove.
Today, the Star Spangled Banner was sung 1.5 times as a whole verse was skipped. When realized, the song was started over.
Scottsdale stadium is known for this kind of stuff though. The first game of Fall League last year the National Anthem recording didn’t work, so a guy came out and asked for the crowd to sing it. “And a 1, and a 2, and a, Oh say…” That was fun. Maybe the stadium has a pre-game curse or something.
In the end, you definitely feel for these people because there are no do overs.
