Huge win today in Phoenix as the Scorpions lead by Bryan Augenstein tossed a shut out against a potent Desert Dogs lineup.
Shutouts are definitely a stat in the AFL that can be easily overlooked. Due to pitch counts, starters are limited on how many innings that can go. Usually 4IP is a “going deep” in to the game, but it still leaves 5 innings to get eaten up by the bullpen every start. 6 pitchers combined on the 4 hitter and that’s notable. 6 different guys had to bring their “A” game to complete it, which is what makes the shutout in the AFL rare.
Of the 5 relief pitchers/5 innings of work, only 1 hit was allowed in the 9th by Reynolds. Huge props to Augenstein, Layne, Turpen, Edlefsen, Baker, Reynolds, and Tuffy for the effort today.
Not to mention it was straight up “lake of fire” hot today with the sun blaring down. It was for that reason I left early, well that and no Giants position players were in the lineup. I knew I would most likely miss outings from Turpen and Edlefsen, but I’m telling you, it was mother hot.
Diamond Notes:
* Augenstein looked great today as already mentioned. 4IP, 3H, BB, 2K’s. Great win for Bryan as he’s had some bad luck with get L’s in decisions thus far.
* Gomez backs up his HR yesterday with 2 doubles. These Rockies are getting hot all of a sudden.
* Tabata went 1-3 making his avg .348.
* Turpen goes .2IP, 2BB, K. Edlefsen goes 1.1IP, BB, 2K’s. Both pitchers got a Hold. Like I said earlier, I left early so there are unfortunately no pictures of the Giants’ ‘Pen.
